Summary

'This lucid guide is essential reading' Guardian

From Donald Trump to Recep Erdogan, populists are on the rise across the globe。 But what exactly is populism?

Should everyone who criticizes Wall Street or Washington be called a populist? What precisely is the difference between right-wing and left-wing populism? Does populism bring government closer to the people or is it a threat to democracy? Who are "the people" anyway and who can speak in their name? These questions have never been more pressing。

In this provocative book, Jan-Werner Müller argues that at populism's core is a rejection of pluralism。 Populists will always claim that they and they alone represent the people and their true interests。 Contrary to conventional wisdom, populists can govern on the basis of their claim to exclusive moral representation of the people: if populists have enough power, they will end up creating an authoritarian state that excludes all those not considered part of the proper "people"。 Proposing a number of concrete strategies for how liberal democrats should best deal with populists, Müller shows how to counter their claims to speak exclusively for "the silent majority"。

It was interesting to read a book that listed step by step what Donald Trump did after the 2016 election that was published prior to his inauguration。 Fantastic read。 A bit heavy on the political vocabulary, if you’re like me and not 600 tabs deep on political theory so you don’t know what terms like “majoritarianism”, “producerism” or many other -ism’s mean, have google define on standby。

A hallmark of science is predictive power。 I'd like to think that it also applies to political science / theory。 This book was published in April 2016 and labeled Donald Trump a populist before he won the election, and 。 Yet its theory and formulation of populism predicted many many things that Trump would do, notably his false claims regarding the result of the 2020 election。 There are many other examples drawn from populist leaders around the world。 Read this book and understand why populism i A hallmark of science is predictive power。 I'd like to think that it also applies to political science / theory。 This book was published in April 2016 and labeled Donald Trump a populist before he won the election, and 。 Yet its theory and formulation of populism predicted many many things that Trump would do, notably his false claims regarding the result of the 2020 election。 There are many other examples drawn from populist leaders around the world。 Read this book and understand why populism is anti-democratic, bigoted, and here to stay。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book is almost horrifying to me since when I look back on my whole life, I’ve been living with populism。 What evokes me most is that “ The idea of the single, homogeneous, authentic people is a fantasy。” The politicians are constantly selling you the idea that “I am the people” and the standard of the “true” people。 But is there any “general standard”? The concept of the “people” is definitely what the politicians should explain at first。

Nice, concise intro to the topic (although still will require some knowledge of basic political terminology to get through it)。 I can't speak to how representative it is of all academic discourse on populism, but it was valuable in any case for the trends it describes。 About a 3-hour listen on audiobook, though I had to jump back often enough to re-listen to a sentence that it probably ended up being more like 4 or 5 in the end。 Nice, concise intro to the topic (although still will require some knowledge of basic political terminology to get through it)。 I can't speak to how representative it is of all academic discourse on populism, but it was valuable in any case for the trends it describes。 About a 3-hour listen on audiobook, though I had to jump back often enough to re-listen to a sentence that it probably ended up being more like 4 or 5 in the end。 。。。more

One of the best pieces of literature on populism that I ever read。 Populism is vaguely defined, but used very widely in the media; especially in the past decade。 I think Müller has correctly identified what discerns populism from other forms of doing politics-- anti-pluralism in addition to being anti-establishment。 The only caveat is that nobody can claim to precisely define populism, because it simply does not mean the same thing to different people。 I think a lot of movements that are called One of the best pieces of literature on populism that I ever read。 Populism is vaguely defined, but used very widely in the media; especially in the past decade。 I think Müller has correctly identified what discerns populism from other forms of doing politics-- anti-pluralism in addition to being anti-establishment。 The only caveat is that nobody can claim to precisely define populism, because it simply does not mean the same thing to different people。 I think a lot of movements that are called 'left-wing populist' do not fit to Müller's definition。 Essentially, he is trying to capture what today's media calls 'right-wing' populism; not populism in general。 He claims that Bernie Sanders in the US, and Podemos in Spain or Syriza in Greece are not populist movements as portrayed in the media。 This may be right, but again, it is not up to a single individual to define populism。 。。。more

Why exactly is pluralism worth preserving? And how can one address theconcerns of populist voters understood as free and equalcitizens, not as pathological cases of men and womendriven by frustration, anger, and resentment? The hopeis that this book has suggested at least some preliminaryanswers to these questions。 。。。more

This small book is great if you are interested in what populism actually means and how to recognise it。 I now realise that it is even more complex as portrayed in the media。 The anti pluralist and anti elitist criteria really spoke to me and made me look differently at politics。 It was new to me that populism does not necessarily have to do anything with their particular point of view, but more with how they present themselves and who they ‘represent’。 A very useful read in this day and age。
